A 25-year-old junior doctor was allegedly raped by her colleague at an abandoned hostel of a government-run medical college in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday in Gajraraja Medical College, leading to the immediate arrest of the accused, also aged 25, police said on Monday.   

Gwalior Superintendent of Police Ashok Jadon stated that the victim, who was preparing for an exam, was residing in the girls' hostel of the college. The accused, a fellow junior doctor, allegedly lured her to meet an abandoned boys' hostel. Upon her arrival, the accused reportedly threatened and raped her.  

Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint at Kampu police station, leading to the arrest of the accused under relevant legal provisions. The police have initiated an investigation into the case.

This incident comes in the wake of heightened concerns about the safety of women in medical institutions. It follows the brutal rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. That case, involving civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, sparked nationwide outrage and protests, with demands for stricter security measures on medical campuses.

Following the RG Kar rape and murder case, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) called on the Centre to introduce a special law aimed at preventing violence against doctors. Residents doctors across the country held strikes and protestors raised their demands, stating that hospitals must be designated as safe zones.

The RG Kar incident also raised legal and investigative debates. Recently, Roy’s lawyer questioned the crime scene based on the victim's post-mortem report, during proceedings at the Sealdah district court.
