Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Tuesday stated that "he owes an apology to the nation" for supporting another party MP, Mahua Moitra, in 2023. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee stated that Moitra has returned the favour by calling him a misogynist, adding that she lacks basic gratitude. A major controversy erupted after Moitra called Banerjee a misogynist after he gave "objectionable" remarks on the Kolkata rape case. Apart from this, the TMC has nominated Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as the party's Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha after Banerjee resigned from the post.
"In 2023, I stood by Ms. Moitra when she was under fire in Parliament — I did so out of conviction, not compulsion. Today, she repays that support by calling me a misogynist. I owe the nation an apology for having defended someone who clearly lacks basic gratitude. Let people see her words for what they are and judge accordingly," Banerjee stated in his post.

Mahua Moitra had recently escalated the controversy when, while discussing Banerjee's remarks, she had called him a "pig" in a podcast. "You don't wrestle with a pig. Because the pig likes it and you get dirty. There are deeply misogynistic, sexually frustrated, depraved men in India and they have their representation in parliament across all parties," Moitra stated, reported the Hindustan Times.

In separate news, TMC on Tuesday informed that Banerjee had resigned from the post of Chief Whip of the party in the Lok Sabha. "Shri Kalyan Banerjee submitted his resignation yesterday to the Chairperson from the post of Chief Whip of the @AITCofficial Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha. The Chairperson has accepted his resignation and thanked him for his contributions in that role," the party said in a statement posted on X.
