The Karnataka Caste Census report has made recommendations to increase the reservation quota for the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) to 51 per cent in the state, which is 32 at present. As per the commission's findings, over 70 per cent of the state population, including Muslims, are OBCs.

If the recommendations are accepted by the government and are subsequently implemented, it would increase the total reservation in the state to 85 per cent, including 10 per cent for Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

At present, there is a 24 per cent reservation for SCs and STs. As per the report by the Jayaprakash Hegde Commission, it is also recommended to restructure the classification within the OBC categories.

Reportedly, CM Siddaramaiah's government will take decision on the recommendations on April 17.  As per a report by the NDTV, the commission has recommended bifurcating Category 1 into Category 1A and Category 1B.

Some people from Category 1 will be moved to Category 1A based on their occupations. Moreover, some others from current Categories 1 and 2A will be moved to the new category 1B based on the current social conditions.
