Prajwal Shetty, a Congress leader's son in Karnataka, ran over a biker on Wednesday, killing the 39-year-old in the hit-and-run case. The officials confirmed that the SUV was being driven by the son of Karnataka Congress leader Devi Prasad Shetty.

The officials stated that he fled after ramming the two-wheeler with his car around 5 am on Wednesday. CCTV visuals captured from a nearby house showed the SUV speeding across the street and hitting a two-wheeler approaching from the opposite direction.

The victim, identified as 39-year-old Mohammad Hussain who was riding the bike, sustained critical injuries to his legs, hands, and head after Prajwal allegedly hit his bike near Shirva. He was initially taken to Ajjarkad Hospital in Udupi for treatment, but the doctors referred him to another hospital for advanced care, and he was shifted to a private hospital in Manipal, where he died the next day of the accident. 

A case was registered at the Shirva Police Station under Sections 281 and 125(b) of the BNS, as well as Sections 134(a) and (b) of the IMV Act. The investigation into this case will be expedited, and a chargesheet will be submitted to the court as soon as possible, the police said.

Shirva police seized the SUV involved in the incident and took Prajwal into custody on November 14. However, he was released on bail soon after, NDTV reported, citing sources. Prajwal's father, Deviprasad Shetty, is a well-known Congress leader from the Belapu village in Udupi.

On August 8, a 37-year-old lawyer named Ravi Melinamani was killed in what seemed to be a hit-and-run incident in Vijayapura. While riding his two-wheeler to his home in Basava Nagar, Melinamani was struck by a car that lacked a number plate. The car dragged him for almost two kilometers before he was finally dislodged near the zilla panchayat main gate, after which the driver fled the scene.
