Karnataka: Starting September 12, the Karnataka government has capped movie ticket prices to a maximum of Rs 200 across all theatres, including multiplexes, excluding taxes. The move comes as part of the recently amended Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2025. This rule applies to screenings of films in every language, ensuring affordable entertainment options for all.

When Will Rs 200 Ticket Rule Be Enforced?

The Rs 200 ticket price cap will come into effect from the date of its final publication in the Official Gazette, NDTV reported. This move marks a significant step towards curbing rising movie ticket prices and making cinema more affordable for all.

The Karnataka film industry has long called for controlling soaring movie ticket prices, especially for Kannada films, which often get overshadowed by pricier screenings of other language films. The Rs 200 ticket price cap will give a much-needed relief to the movie-goers across the state.

Which THEATRES Are Exempted?

The Rs 200 ticket price cap does not apply to multi-screen cinemas offering premium facilities with 75 seats or fewer, NDTV reported. Earlier in July, the Karnataka government invoked its authority under Section 19 of the Karnataka Cinema (Control) Act, 1964, to draft rules to amend the Karnataka Cinema (Control) Rules, 2014.

The Karnataka government has invited stakeholders to provide feedback on the new rules within 15 days, and only after carefully reviewing all objections and suggestions were the new ticket pricing rules finalised and implemented.
