Indora-Dighori Flyover: In what can only be described as a surreal sight, the city's ambitious Rs 998-crore Indora-Dighori flyover now appears to slice right through the balcony of a home in Ashok Square. A segment of the flyover almost touches the residence of the Patre family, raising eyebrows and cameras as videos and photos of the bizarre construction have gone viral online.

While many on social media have slammed the development as a clear case of "faulty planning", civic authorities were quick to offer an explanation. According to officials, the house in question was built illegally, without any sanctioned plan from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). However, despite confirming the unauthorized status of the building, no demolition or action has been taken so far.

The flyover is part of a larger infrastructure overhaul stretching from Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh Square and from Bhande Plot Square to Dighori. But none of it has attracted as much attention as the portion at Ashok Square where the flyover seems to land right at the Patre family’s doorstep.

Shrusti Patre, speaking to Lokmat Times, acknowledged the oddity of the situation but seemed resigned to it. “We can’t do anything because it’s a government project,” she said, calling the disruption a "minor inconvenience".

When asked whether the family had been warned in advance, she revealed they were only notified a few months ago. “We were served a notice only months ago,” she said, adding that no compensation had been offered so far. Though local MLA Pravin Datke has expressed sympathy toward their situation, the construction work hasn't paused laborers continue mixing cement just outside their metal grill.

NHAI Responds

In response to the controversy, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued a clarification. Speaking to Lokmat Times, the authority said, “Regarding the recent visuals circulating on social media about the Indora–Dighori Flyover at Ashok Chowk, Nagpur, it is clarified that during the construction stage, NHAI identified the encroachment and formally requested @ngpnmc for necessary removal action. NMC has also verified that the house structure in question was built without any sanctioned building plan.”

They further stated, “Kindly note that there is a 1.5m distance from the extreme edge of the flyover rotary beam to the edge of the structure. However, the property owner has extended the balcony beyond the plot boundary, and the protruding portion will be demolished shortly.”
