Karnataka: Three police officials were suspended over alleged negligence in investigation after a man was killed by a mob in Karnataka’s Mangaluru on Sunday. Inspector Shivakumar, Head Constable Chandra P, and Constable Yallalinga from the Mangaluru rural police station have been suspended, said Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, as quoted by news agency ANI. As per the police, there is no concrete evidence that pro-Pakistani slogans were raised which reportedly resulted in the mob lynching incident and therefore no FIR has been registered.

“Since we do not have any concrete evidence that pro-Pakistani slogans were raised, no FIR has been registered in this regard,” Agarwal said on Thursday, as quoted by a Hindustan Times report.

As per the initial first information report (FIR), the assault reportedly took place in view of Pro-Pakistan slogan. “The police officer and constables did not understand the severity of the case and failed to register an FIR under charges of murder. The inspector merely registered a case of unnatural death despite the body having severe wound marks,” Agarwal said, as per HT.

On Wednesday, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara had said that the claim about the pro-Pakistan slogan was unverified.

“An incident of mob lynching has been reported involving an unidentified individual. I was informed that there are reports he was shouting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ during a local cricket match, which led some people to beat him. He didn’t die on the spot but passed away later. I’m yet to receive the full report. Around 10 to 12 people have been arrested and further investigation is underway,” Parameshwara said.

The police initially registered a case of unnatural death but it wasn’t until the autopsy was done that multiple blunt force injuries and lack of medical attention were found to be the reasons for his death.

“Initially, the police registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation after the body was found near the temple grounds. A post-mortem conducted on April 28 confirmed that the death was due to multiple blunt force injuries and lack of medical attention,” Agarwal told PTI.

Agarwal stated that the victim sustained injuries on the limbs, back, buttocks, and genitals, caused by beatings with wooden logs.
