Karnataka Menstrual Leave Policy: In a significant move, the Karnataka government on Wednesday announced that all working women aged 18 and 52, across permanent, contractual, and outsourced roles, will be eligible for one day of menstrual leave per month.

According to a Deccan Herald report, the Karnataka government issued an order granting menstrual leave on November 12. This decision comes about a month after the state cabinet approved the policy.

In an order dated November 12, the Karnataka government said, “Employers have been directed to provide 12 paid leaves per year to all women employees aged 18-52 in establishments coming under Factories Act, 1948, Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, Plantation Workers Act, 1951, Beedi Cigar Workers (condition of employment) Act, 1966 and Motor Vehicle Workers Act, 1961.”

- The policy was drafted by an 18-member committee chaired by Dr Sapna S of Christ (Deemed-to-be University), the report added.

- The panel initially proposed six menstrual leaves per year, but the Labour Department revised it to 12 before sending the final draft to the government for approval.

- According to the government order, this leave provision covers women aged 18 to 52, working under the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, including IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) firms.

- Women employees must use their menstrual leave within the same month, as it cannot be carried forward.

- Additionally, women employees are not required to submit a medical certificate to avail of the leave.
