Karnataka Power Shift: Karnataka, with the resignation of Siddaramaiah from the CM post, is going through a significant political transition. DK Shivakumar, the current deputy chief minister and KPCC chief, is likely to be the next chief minister of the state. Earlier on Friday, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar met senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi separately in New Delhi. The name of the next chief minister is expected to be announced today after a high-profile meeting of MLAs in Bengaluru.
A formal Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting will be held in Bengaluru at 4 PM, where the MLAs will decide the next chief minister. The meeting will be overseen by the AICC observers, including KC Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala. As per the reports, the date of the swearing-in ceremony will be finalised soon after the key meeting.
While Shivakumar is highly likely to get the chief ministerial post, the close aides of Siddaramaiah are also expected to be given key portfolios to balance the power. Additionally, the reports suggested that Yathindra, the son of Siddaramaiah, is likely to receive a key portfolio.
Apart from this, the party might introduce several new faces in the cabinet to counter the anti-incumbency. Congress senior leader Saleem Ahmed proposed allocating nearly half of the cabinet portfolios to fresh faces. "Absolutely, new faces will be introduced. As we have stated previously, we believe that 50% of the cabinet positions should be allocated to new faces," Ahmed said.
However, the senior leaders who are likely to be dropped from the cabinet might get key responsibilities in the party organisation. Siddaramaiah is also set to continue working in state politics after denying the Rajya Sabha post offered by the top brass.
