Karnataka hosts the highest number of foreign students studying in different colleges across universities in the country. The south Indian state has 6,004 international students, followed by Punjab with 5,971, Maharashtra with 4,856 and Uttar Pradesh with 4,323, according to a recent report released by The Times of India. 

The report stated that India has a total of 46,878 foreign students from 170 countries, with Nepal being the largest source of international students. More than 13,000 Nepalese students are studying in India, as they enjoy visa-free access and better educational opportunities.

Students from Nepal also constitute the largest chunk for undergraduate studies, while those from Afghanistan account for the largest number of PhD aspirants. Other countries that send a large number of students to India are Afghanistan, USA, UAE, Bangladesh and even Iceland, as per the report.

Karnataka's capital city Bengaluru is the most preferred destination for foreign students, as it has a wide range of private colleges and it offers the best job opportunities among major Indian cities. Many colleges in Bengaluru also have special international cells to address the concerns of foreign students. 

Other cities in Karnataka, such as Mysuru, Manipal, Dharwad and Mangalore, also have a significant number of international students, which offer courses in a wide range of subjects and fields of study.
