The decision comes as the Valley continues to experience relentless rainfall for the past 48 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting further precipitation in the coming 24 hours. The IMD reported that Jammu and Kashmir received 16.9 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on April 20, a staggering 575 per cent increase from the normal 2.5 mm.
The extreme weather conditions have already caused widespread disruption and damage, particularly in the Ramban district. On Sunday morning, three people lost their lives following torrential rains and a cloudburst in the Seri Bagna village. Flash floods also struck Dharam Kund village, damaging around 40 residential houses, of which 10 were completely destroyed.
Over 100 villagers were rescued by police teams amid the deluge and continuous cloudbursts. Several vehicles were swept away by an overflowing stream and transportation was severely impacted due to landslides and mudslides at multiple points between Nashri and Banihal on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Hundreds have been displaced as emergency services continue relief and rescue efforts.
