Snow Prediction In Kashmir: If you’re planning a trip to Kashmir in January, be prepared for a scenic winter experience, as the region is expected to see moderate snowfall during the first week of the month.
Kashmir is experiencing a significant dip in temperatures as the region prepares for moderate snowfall, beginning with a sharp drop in night temperatures on Tuesday. According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, the weather is expected to be influenced by two consecutive Western Disturbances (WD) starting January 1, bringing varying conditions across Jammu and Kashmir.
The first, a mild WD, is set to bring light snowfall to scattered areas of the region on January 1 and 2, with weather conditions expected to improve shortly after. However, a more significant WD will arrive between January 3 and 6, bringing light to moderate rain over the plains of Jammu and snow at many places in the Kashmir Valley. The peak of this snowfall will occur between January 4 and 5, and there is a possibility of heavy snow in isolated higher reaches.
The MeT office has issued a weather advisory, urging tourists, travelers, and transporters to stay updated with the local administration and traffic advisories due to sub-freezing temperatures and icy conditions, especially on roads in both plains and higher areas.
Meanwhile, the cold wave continues to dominate, with freezing temperatures across the valley affecting daily life. Major water bodies in the region have frozen, causing disruptions. The MeT office further confirmed that these cold wave conditions are likely to persist until the end of the year.

Temperatures have dropped sharply across the valley. On Tuesday, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -3.5°C, significantly lower than the previous night's -0.9°C. This drop is nearly 1°C below the average for this time of year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The popular ski resort of Gulmarg has seen even colder temperatures, with the mercury dropping to a chilling -11.5°C on Tuesday, a notable decline from -10.0°C the previous night. This is 5.6°C below the average for this time of year. Other locations such as Pahalgam and Kokernag also reported below-normal temperatures, further emphasizing the severity of the ongoing cold spell.
As the region experiences these extreme conditions, travelers planning to visit Kashmir in early January should be prepared for icy weather and possible travel delays. Staying informed and following local advisories will be crucial for a safe and enjoyable trip to this winter wonderland.
