Alappuzha, Kerala Bird Flu: The State Health Minister Veena George has directed the health department to take immediate action under the Kerala Public Health Act of 2023 following reports of a bird flu outbreak in two panchayats in Alappuzha. Panchayat-level committees are tasked with assessing the situation and implementing necessary measures across Alappuzha and nearby areas. The revival of 'One Health' committees in the panchayats has been instructed to ensure comprehensive responses.
Confirmation of bird flu came from ducks in specific wards of Edathva and Cheruthana Grama Panchayats. The presence of avian influenza (H5N1) was confirmed through tests conducted on symptomatic duck samples sent to a Bhopal lab. Consequently, the Animal Husbandry Department initiated bird culling operations in the affected areas of Kuttanad, where approximately 21,000 ducks will be culled, along with domesticated birds within a one-kilometer radius of the outbreak zones.
To prevent the spread of bird flu, vigilance has heightened at 12 border check posts in neighboring Tamil Nadu. These posts are equipped with veterinary staff, and vehicles carrying poultry products from Kerala are being inspected and disinfected. Additionally, 432 samples from poultry farms have been examined in Tamil Nadu, showing no signs of bird flu.

Kerala Bird Flu: Understanding H5N1, Symptoms And Treatment
H5N1, also known as bird flu, is a highly pathogenic subtype of avian influenza A, causing severe illness in poultry and occasionally transmitting to humans. It primarily spreads through contact with infected animal fluids and can lead to severe respiratory illness in humans.
H5N1 Symptoms and Detection:
Symptoms of H5N1 infection in humans range from mild flu-like symptoms to severe respiratory illness. Diagnosing bird flu virus infection requires laboratory testing, typically through swabs collected from the upper respiratory tract.
H5N1 Treatment and Precautionary Measures:
Treatment for bird flu usually involves antiviral medications such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and supportive care. Precautionary measures include avoiding contact with sick birds, practicing good hygiene, and ensuring thorough cooking of poultry products.
