A man from Thrissur, Kerala, attacked his father with a machete on Saturday and then barricaded himself inside their home for hours, threatening to commit suicide. According to reports, the altercation arose over property documents. The incident took place at around 1:30 pm near the Shivakshetram temple.
Police identified the accused as Vishnu, a resident of Muthrathikkara, who assaulted his father, Shivan, an auto driver, following a dispute over house papers. Shivan suffered severe head and neck injuries and is currently in a coma at Thrissur Medical College, fighting for his life.
According to the NDTV report, police said, Shivan and his wife visited Vishnu at his rented home to inquire about the records. Vishnu reportedly claimed he had discarded the papers into a well, leading to a confrontation that escalated into violence. He attacked his father in the kitchen and again outside the house while armed with a knife. Shivan’s wife and a relative managed to escape and alert authorities.
Police and fire personnel quickly arrived at the scene, where Vishnu had locked himself upstairs and threatened to harm himself if approached. For over three hours, officials and local residents attempted to gain entry, including breaking windows and roof tiles. At one point, Vishnu climbed onto the terrace of a neighbouring house, holding knives to his neck to prevent interference. The standoff ended around 5:30 pm when police, with the assistance of locals, convinced him to surrender. He was taken into custody.

Neighbours told authorities that Vishnu, who had been living apart from his parents, frequently engaged in solitary rituals and occult practices. Police suspect that mental health issues may have contributed to the incident and transferred him to Thrissur Medical College for evaluation. His statement will be recorded at the hospital before any further legal proceedings.
Medical officials confirmed that Shivan remains in critical condition.
