Kerala Monsoon: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday stated that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on May 27, four days earlier than the usual date of June 1. The weather department stated that if the monsoon arrives as per the expected date, it will be the earliest monsoon since 2009. It further stated that the monsoon began on May 23, adding that multiple districts had received record rainfall that year.
The weather department stated that usually the southwest monsoon commences in Kerala by June 1 and arrives in all parts of the country by July 8. It further stated that while the monsoon starts retreating from northwest India around September 17, it ends in the whole country by October 15. However, the weather department also stated that April has received more rain than usual, indicating that there will be no El Niño conditions this year. The El Niño effect is associated with rainfall below normal in the Indian subcontinent.
"India is likely to see above-normal rainfall in the four-month monsoon season (June to September), with cumulative rainfall estimated at 105 per cent (with a model error of 5 per cent) of the long-period average of 87 cm," M Ravichandran, secretary in the Earth Sciences Ministry, was quoted as saying by PTI. Earlier on Wednesday, the weather department stated that multiple districts of Kerala are likely to experience heavy rain with thunderstorms in the upcoming few days.
It stated that the rain will reduce the temperature by two to four degrees Celsius, providing major relief from scorching heat. The weather department has advised the residents, especially those from the coastal regions, to follow the guidelines and limit their outings to avoid any inconveniences. Apart from Kerala, other southern states, including Tamil Nadu and Telangana, are also likely to receive rainfall during this period of time.
