Kerala Monsoon Update: Kerala is set to witness heavy rainfall all week as the southwest monsoon makes its entry into the state. The arrival of the monsoon over Kerala marks the official beginning of India’s annual rainy season and is closely monitored across the country.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for all 14 districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rainfall in parts of the state until June 8.

For Tuesday, the IMD has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram.

 

The IMD has forecast a significant increase in rainfall activity across the state in the coming days, bringing relief from the intense summer heat while also raising concerns over heavy rain-related hazards.

For June 3, the IMD has issued an orange alert for very heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Malappuram on Wednesday and Thursday, while Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode will be under an orange alert on Thursday.

Meanwhile, South India is likely to witness thunderstorms and gusty winds, with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu experiencing wind speeds of 40-50 kmph. Kerala and Lakshadweep may see isolated heavy rainfall, while coastal Andhra Pradesh could face thundersqualls gusting up to 70 kmph, the weather department said.

The IMD further advised residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged areas, and take precautions against heatwaves. Farmers have been urged to protect crops from heavy rainfall and hail, and ensure livestock are sheltered with sufficient water.
