Kerala News: Three medical students from Bengaluru lost their lives after being pulled away by strong waves while swimming at Payyambalam Beach in Kerala’s Kannur district on Sunday morning.

Police identified the deceased as Afnan, Rahanuddeen and Afras, all residents of Karnataka and students pursuing medicine in Bengaluru. The group had reportedly visited the beach for a morning swim when the incident occurred around 11 AM, according to officials.

As per reports, eight students had entered the sea together when three of them were suddenly caught in powerful currents and dragged away from the shore. Lifeguards and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation and managed to bring the three students back to land. However, they were declared dead at a nearby hospital despite medical efforts to save them.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and further investigation into the incident is underway, police said. The remaining five students, who escaped unharmed, are said to be safe but traumatised by the loss.

Payyambalam Beach, a well-known tourist destination in Kannur, is known for its scenic stretch but also for unpredictable waves during certain times. Authorities have urged visitors to remain cautious while swimming in unfamiliar waters.

In a separate news, woman sustained critical injuries after being pushed out of a moving Kerala Express train near Varkala on Sunday night. Police said the accused, identified as Suresh Kumar from Vellarada in Thiruvananthapuram, was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident. The woman and her friend had boarded the unreserved coach from Aluva and were heading to Thiruvananthapuram when Suresh reportedly shoved her from the doorway around 8:30 pm. She was later found on the tracks about two kilometres from Varkala and taken to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The accused was detained by RPF personnel at Kochuveli station and handed over to police.
