The weather department has sounded an orange alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki, where very heavy showers ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm are expected over the coming days.

The downpour began on Thursday, affecting mostly the central and southern regions of Kerala. Among the highest recorded rainfall was 80 mm at Lower Sholayar in Thrissur, followed by 68 mm in Pathanamthitta and 55 mm in Karumadi, Alappuzha, according to the IMD. Kollam and parts of Pathanamthitta also saw substantial rainfall, while areas like Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, and Kochi witnessed more moderate showers. The state capital received 29 mm of rain.

An 'orange alert' denotes "very heavy" rainfall of 11 to 20 cm, while a 'yellow alert' signals "heavy rain" between 6 and 10 cm.

On Friday, yellow alerts are expected for eight districts stretching from Thrissur to southern Thiruvananthapuram.

The rainfall comes as Wednesday's low-pressure area over north Odisha and the adjoining Bay of Bengal weakened, but its cyclonic circulation remained in place.

Besides central and southern Kerala, rain was reported at most places in Lakshadweep, IMD said.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious as wet conditions continue, especially in districts under alert.
