Kerala Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five northern districts of Kerala as the state braces for intense monsoon activity over the next few days. Continuous rainfall since Friday night has already caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas.

The red alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall—over 204.4 mm in 24 hours. These districts are likely to receive more rain in the coming days due to a low-pressure system expected to form over the Bay of Bengal by July 24.

The IMD has predicted heavy rain across Kerala from July 19 to 22, with strong winds between 40 and 50 kmph likely in isolated areas. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols, especially in flood-prone regions.

Meanwhile, officials in Kozhikode are keeping a close watch on the weather situation and are ready to move residents from hilly regions and areas near rivers or streams to safer places if the rain intensifies.

According to figures from the State Agriculture Department, Kozhikode district alone has reported a significant crop loss of Rs 44 crore due to the widespread rains received since May.
