Heavy rains and strong winds continued to batter Kerala on Wednesday, causing widespread damage and disruption across the state. Houses were damaged, trees uprooted and water levels in rivers and dams rose steadily. High tides and sea incursions were reported in districts like Thrissur and Ernakulam, while landslides wreaked havoc in the high ranges of Kozhikode.
Moderate to intense rainfall with winds up to 40 kmph is expected in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts in the coming hours, according to the latest radar imagery.
Several houses were damaged in Alappuzha, Kannur and Idukki districts following heavy rains and speedy winds. In Kollam district, part of the dining hall at the renowned Oachira Parabrahma Temple collapsed due to incessant rains.
Numerous trees were uprooted on the banks of the Periyar River in Aluva near Ernakulam. Shutters at several dams, including Malankara, Pambla and Kallarkutty, were raised to release excess water. The Ernakulam District Administration urged residents along the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers to remain vigilant as three shutters of Malankara Dam were raised by one meter each.
A holiday was declared for educational institutions in Kottayam district on Wednesday due to ongoing rains. The state Disaster Management Authority warned of potential waterlogging on major roads and poor visibility, advising effective traffic regulation and restriction of non-essential movements.
