Kerala Weather Update: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Kerala on Sunday as the Northeast Monsoon intensified, leading to widespread waterlogging and flooding across the state. In Idukki district, one person lost his life in a rain-related incident. The victim, identified as 66-year-old Parappallil Thomas, died after his two-wheeler was caught under mud near Vellaramkunnu late Saturday night. The man was returning home after closing his shop when the fatal accident occurred.
Heavy Rain Causes Severe Waterlogging
Intense downpour in Kumily caused severe waterlogging. Power lines were dislodged, vehicles washed away and main arterial roads were choked. The district administration closed all tourist activities amid the rains.
Orang Alert In Ernakulam And Idukki
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Ernakulam and Idukki on Monday. Except Kannur and Kasaragod, all Kerala districts have been put on a yellow alert with moderate rains expected in the next 24 hours.
On Sunday heavy downpour occurred in Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur districts too. Six districts were on an orange alert on Sunday.
As per the weather body, there exists a well-marked low pressure area over southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep. This low pressure area will shift west north-westwards and intensify into a depression over the next 24 hours.

IMD Issues Advisory
According to the IMD advisory, local administrations will shift people in vulnerable areas to safer places as per the alerts issued by the weather body.
The Tamil Nadu government opened the shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam on Sunday morning following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas. The move was aimed at regulating the rising water levels in the reservoir and preventing any potential overflow.
