After the success of the Kochi Water Metro, the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has begun the feasibility study to develop an urban water transport system in Alappuzha. A senior KMRL official stated that an expert team had visited Alappuzha to assess the feasibility of introducing a water transport system. The official added that the primary focus would be on catering to tourists who visit the region, known for its scenic lagoons and serene backwaters.
The proposed network is expected to cover tourist destinations including Kumarakom, Muhamma, and Pathiramanal, a small island on Vembanad Lake renowned for its rare migratory bird sightings, quoted the New Indian Express.
“These are lengthy routes compared to those in Kochi. But then we won’t be using the exact boats, but those with higher battery capacity. We will decide on the vessels based on route requirements. The water metro will offer a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel option,” the official pointed out.
A team of experts from the KMRL is slated to visit Kollam next week for a similar expansion of the water metro in the area. Additionally, KMRL is conducting a pre-feasibility study for introducing water metro services along the Aluva-Nedumbassery airport corridor. “We will submit the preliminary report within a month,” the official said.
KMRL Prepares DPR For Mumbai’s Water Metro
The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has bagged the contract to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Mumbai's proposed Water Metro project, modelled on the successful Kochi Water Metro.
The consultancy assignment worth Rs 4.4 crore has been awarded by the Maharashtra government through a competitive tender process, the KMRL said.
According to KMRL, with this, Kochi Metro has entered the league of national-level consultancies, similar to the pioneering role played by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in the metro rail sector.
“The DPR will build upon the feasibility study earlier prepared by KMRL's consultancy wing, which explored water metro connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The proposed network spans key water bodies such as Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja, and envisions extensive commuter connectivity for India's financial capital,” a KMRL statement said.
