Due to a technical glitch, a Kochi-bound SpiceJet flight returned to Chennai, the airline confirmed on Monday.

"On December 9, 2024, SpiceJet's Q400 aircraft operating from Chennai to Kochi returned to Chennai due to a technical issue. The aircraft landed safely, and passengers were deplaned normally," the SpiceJet statement read.

According to reports, the technical snag forced the pilots to make an emergency landing at Chennai airport. "The flight departed with 117 passengers. After detecting the technical issue, the pilots decided to return to Chennai and made an emergency landing. Required safety measures were followed, and the aircraft landed safely," PTI reported.

The plane encountered an engine problem mid-flight. Upon discovering the issue, the pilots promptly contacted the airport control room in Chennai, where officials instructed them to return immediately. The aircraft safely landed at 7:15 am, and engineers were inspecting the faulty engine, as reported by News9.

The passengers were deboarded and accommodated in the airport lounges, the report stated.

In a separate incident on the same day, another SpiceJet flight was diverted. The carrier's Delhi-Shillong flight was rerouted to Patna due to a crack in the cockpit windshield.

"On December 9, 2024, SpiceJet's Q400 aircraft operating from Delhi to Shillong was diverted to Patna after a crack was observed in the windshield. It is important to note that there are three layers in the windshield, and only one layer of a particular window had a crack. The diversion was purely a precautionary measure. The aircraft made a normal landing, not an emergency landing, and passengers were deplaned normally. Pressurization was normal throughout the flight," said a SpiceJet spokesperson.
