Kolkata News: A businessman in Kolkata was allegedly assaulted by members of a local club for refusing to pay a donation of Rs 10,000 towards Durga Puja celebrations. The incident took place at Gobra Gorosthan Road on Friday and has triggered political controversy.
The victim, identified as Amit Sarkar, is himself a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker. According to his complaint lodged at Tapsia police station, members of the Ujjwal Sangha club, dominated by TMC workers, first demanded Rs 4,000 as a donation but later raised the amount to Rs 10,000. Sarkar claimed that when he refused, he was beaten up with bamboo sticks and iron rods.
The Indian Express report cited Sarkar as stating that, his family members were also attacked when they tried to intervene. “When they came to my house, they misbehaved with my brother. When I confronted them, a heated argument followed, and then they started beating me. My wife, father, and brother were also assaulted,” he alleged.
Sarkar added that he had been associated with the club and its Puja committee for years but left the group in 2024, though he continues to remain active in TMC.
Police confirmed that an investigation is underway based on Sarkar’s complaint. The News 18 report cited Sources as stating that, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been briefed and has asked the authorities to act against those responsible.
TMC spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya expressed regret over the incident and urged police to take strict measures. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly criticised the ruling party, calling it a hub of corruption and extortion. BJP leader Sajal Ghosh alleged that TMC workers act with impunity as they believe the police will not act against them.
