Mizoram Freight Services To begin
Along with passenger trains, Mizoram will also see its first goods train service from 14 September. The Ministry of Railways has planned freight operations for cement, steel, household items and agricultural produce. Officials said the move will help cut logistics costs and bring down market prices in the state.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the line could also be used for transporting vegetables, flowers and fruits such as dragon fruit from Mizoram to other parts of India. He added that the model is similar to the rail service used for apple transportation from Kashmir to Delhi, which has boosted farmers’ income.
The 51.38-km-long Bairabi–Sairang project was built at a cost of about Rs 8,071 crore. The line has 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, along with several road overbridges and underpasses. Among its structures, Bridge No. 196 is one of the tallest in India, rising 114 metres, which is 42 metres higher than the Qutub Minar in Delhi.
The launch of this rail service is expected to bring Mizoram closer to the rest of the country, offering new opportunities for trade, travel and tourism.
