The grievous rape and murder of a female medico in Kolkata-based RG Kar Medical College, which sparked a furore across the country, has completed over a month. Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government has been attracting massive ire over its lackadaisical attitude in dealing with the case during the initial phase of the probe.

The case was handed over to the CBI after the victim’s parents filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court in this regard. However, the federal probe agency too couldn’t achieve anything big since it took over the probe. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, was arrested by the Kolkata Police. The CBI later nabbed Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the state-run hospital, and three others in a separate case, pertaining to financial irregularities in the institution.

However, a CBI official apprised the news agency PTI about the roadblocks it encountered during the complex probe.

The CBI official said they were not able to find clues at the crime scene as it was altered after the incident. He said Dr Ghosh ordered the demolition of a restroom and a toilet near the crime scene, which changed the nature of the crime scene. He said key evidence were lost during this exercise.

A video, that surfaced on social media, revealed a packed seminar room shortly after the victim's body was discovered. Concerns about whether the crime scene was compromised were also raised following the mob violence at the hospital on the night of August 14.

However, the Kolkata Police said the crime scene was intact and the body of the victim was found in another portion of the seminar hall and hence not in the area which was shown packed with people in the viral video.

Gangrape angle:

The victim’s parents, during the first phase of the probe, told the Calcutta High Court that said suspected gangrape. They have been repeatedly asserting that the state government and police were involved in tampering with evidence.
