State Bureau, Kolkata: In a major update on the collapse of a warehouse roof in Kolkata, officials have revealed that the building plan of the structure carried the signature of former mayor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Firhad Hakim. A total of five people have been arrested in connection with the collapse.
At least nine workers were killed while 20 others were injured after the roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed on Transport Depot Road in West Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the site, and relief and rescue operations continued late into the night.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had said that preliminary information received from Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) engineers showed that there were deficiencies in the building plan approved for the warehouse. The CM has halted work on all ongoing commercial projects approved by the previous TMC government till July 31 and ordered a comprehensive audit of such projects following the warehouse collapse incident.
Bengal Govt Announces Financial Assistance
The Bengal government has announced financial assistance for the relatives of the deceased. Giving full details of the incident in the Assembly on Thursday, CM Suvendu said that financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh will be given to the family of each person who lost his life in the accident.
The injured will receive a compensation of Rs 1 lakh. The Chief Minister told the Assembly that 29 people have been pulled from the wreckage since the accident and the other injured are being treated at the government-run SSKM Hospital.
He added that relief and rescue operations are still ongoing, as it is feared that many people are still trapped under the debris. The government is monitoring the situation and has directed the administration to complete the relief work expeditiously.
