Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Amid nationwide outrage and ongoing strikes by doctors demanding strict laws for the safety of health workers following the rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee medical student at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi and other hospitals in the national capital have announced to provide the OPD (Out Patient Department) services for free in front of the Health Ministry on the road from August 19. 

In a statement, the AIIMS Resident Doctors Association said that free services will be provided at Nirman Sadan (Health Ministry) till they are assured of adequate security in hospitals through a Central Protection Act.

"Resident doctors will be available for providing Elective OPD services of around 36 specialities including medicine, Surgery, OBS & Gynae, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics and others to patients outside Nitraman Bhawan, Emergency services will continue as before at our hospitals,” the statement read.

The association further requested the government to accept their plea and come up with an ordinance for the safety of health workers. "We are urging the government to accept our plea for an urgent central ordinance for the safety and security of healthcare workers and institutes," the statement read.

Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Here Are The Latest Updates

Following the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor in Kolkata, the resident doctors of AIIMS have been on an indefinite strike since August 12, suspending all elective and non-essential services including OPDs and wards. The protesting doctors have been demanding justice for the victim and a security act for the medical personnel.

- Meanwhile, doctors at ESI Hospital in Delhi's Basaidarapur went on a strike in response to the brutal assault and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The protesting doctors have demanded immediate arrest and strict punishment of those responsible for the attack.

- The protesting doctors also demanded the implementation of basic security provisions like CCTV cameras, proper lighting, and security guards in hospitals.

- Amid nationwide outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee medical student, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh shared a letter requesting West Bengal Chief Minister and Governor CV Ananda Bose to take immediate action in connection with the case. 

- In response to the letter, Governor Bose emphasised that he "has called an emergency meeting of a cross-section of Bengal society to apprise them of the action taken in the matter and to gather their opinions on the issue."

- The parents of the doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital requested all countrymen to stand with them until all accused are caught.

- "Through you, we want to give a message to the people of the whole country. We are grateful to all the countrymen, people of the world and the state, we request that you stand with us until the accused is caught. We only wish that this should not happen to any mother, no one should lose their child like us," the trainee doctor’s mother was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

- The post-graduate medical student's semi-naked body was reportedly found in the hospital's seminar hall. She had gone to the hall to relax after sharing a meal with her two colleagues. 

- The initial post-mortem report revealed that the female doctor was bleeding from her eyes, nose and private parts. Her neck was also found to be broken. She sustained injuries to other parts of her body as well.
