Kolkata Law Student Rape Case: Here Are The Top Updates
- The main accused Monojit Mishra is reportedly a ‘history-sheeter’ and he was named in several cases, including harassment, assault, and theft in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction.
- The number of SIT members increased to nine, hours after a five-member SIT was formed under the supervision of ACP Pradip Kumar Ghosal, SSD, to investigate the alleged rape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata on June 25 evening.
- National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar on Sunday visited the South Kolkata Law College, where the student was allegedly gang-raped by three persons, including an alumnus. She claimed that the police could not provide her with the details of the whereabouts of the survivor.
- Trinamool Congress issued a show-cause notice to party MLA Madan Mitra over his recent comments on the alleged gangrape case at South Kolkata Law College.
- On Sunday, the West Bengal LoP and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari said they (security guards) would not help (the students), because they were from the TMC. "They (guards) did not get the job because they passed any exam. They got a job because they are party cadre. Nothing is going to happen (if four people are arrested). There is media hype right now. After 15-20 days, everything will be silent. If the police have recovered any footage, that would also mean nothing because the police are responsible. All the police were in Digha. No one was here. The police were working to arrest the Opposition leaders," he added.
- TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee once again made comment on the case. He said "Yes, incidents do happen. Not all men are like this, but some have a perverted mindset. These perverted men then come out on the streets, hold protests and demand the death penalty."
- Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan said, "In any state, whether it is our government or the BJP government, if there is harassment against women, then it is absolutely condemnable and it should not be tolerated in any situation. We went to Odisha and in a week there were cases of gang rapes in three different places. It is unfortunate that everywhere it is politicised."
- The Kasba Law College victim’s family expressed full faith in the Kolkata Police and declined to meet the National Commission for Women, stating they are satisfied with the current investigation and want no interference.
- Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, "50 years ago, an Emergency was declared to dismantle, tear apart, and disregard the country's constitution. It is disheartening that the party carrying forward that Congress culture is the Trinamool Congress. It has not yet overcome that mindset. Bengal has been a laboratory for women's progress for many years. Whether it is RG Kar Medical College or a Law College, it reflects their mindset, even though the head of the ruling party is a woman. What kind of statements are coming from their leaders? This is a very dangerous mindset in a republic."
- Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday morning walked out of the Kolkata Police headquarters after being detained, along with other BJP leaders, overnight following a protest against the gang rape of a student at a law college. Stating that he had refused bail on personal bond, Majumdar, also the BJP state unit chief, said that the police released them in the morning without pressing any charge.
