Kolkata Weather Forecast: Kolkata is likely to witness light to moderate showers and gusty winds until March 23 morning, potentially affecting the IPL 2025 opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens on Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The rain and thunderstorms are being triggered by an anti-cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The showers are expected to begin Friday evening and continue until Saturday morning, with sunny intervals anticipated in the afternoon.
Besides Kolkata, regions like Howrah, Hooghly, and East Midnapore could witness intense thunderstorms, hailstorms, and lightning over the weekend. Wind speeds of 50-60 kmph may also affect isolated areas of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
''Isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on March 21,'' the IMD stated.
Notably, the forecast of thunderstorms with lightning by Kolkata's Regional Meteorological Centre threatens a potential washout for the IPL 2025 season opener between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the IMD has advised fishermen along the West Bengal and Odisha coasts to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. The stormy weather is expected to persist across Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka on March 23, bringing thunderstorms and gusty winds. Residents are urged to stay cautious and follow weather alerts throughout the weekend.
