Kolkata Weather Today: City Records Coldest Day Of Season, Worst January In 13 Years; Rain Alert, Snowfall Likely In Darjeeling

Kolkata Temperature Today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said Kolkata experienced the coldest day of the season, with the minimum temperature plunging to 10.2 degrees Celsius, which is 3.7 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature settled at 18.4 degrees Celsius, a sharp 6.7 degrees below the seasonal average.

According to IMD data, this is the coldest January Kolkata has witnessed in the last 13 years, making Tuesday the most severe cold spell of the ongoing winter.

Rain Alert, Snowfall Likely in Hills

The IMD has issued a rain alert for Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri over the next few days.
There is a possibility of snowfall in the higher reaches of Darjeeling, and the Alipore Meteorological Department said that day temperatures in North Bengal may remain four to five degrees below normal, with snowfall likely in high-altitude areas such as Sandakphu, Ghum, Dhotre and Chatakpur.

Cold Wave To Intensify Across Several Districts

Several districts of West Bengal, including Bankura, East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, South and North Dinajpur, Murshidabad and Nadia, are expected to experience intensified winter conditions.

In North Bengal, maximum temperatures may stay three to four degrees below normal over the next few days.

Minimum temperatures across West Bengal (in degrees Celsius): Asansol 8.8, Ashoknagar 8.4, Berhampore 9.0, Bankura 7.8, Bishnupur 7.8, Burdwan 7.2, Cooch Behar 9.1, Darjeeling 3.2, Diamond Harbour 9.4, Digha 9.8, Kalimpong 9.0, Kolkata 10.2, Krishnanagar 8.0, Malda 9.7, Murshidabad 7.4, Purulia 9.4, Siliguri 8.8 and Sriniketan 6.2.

No Immediate Relief From Cold Spell

The Alipore Meteorological Department has stated that there is no immediate relief from the intense cold.

The strong cold wave is expected to continue across South Bengal for the next few days, while North Bengal will also remain under the grip of severe winter conditions.
