Kurnool Bus Fire: 20 people were charred to death after a Bengaluru-bound private sleeper bus met with an accident and burst into flames near the Chinna Tekur village in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased's next of kin, expressing sorrow over the Kurnool bus tragedy. PM also announced Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

"I am shocked to learn about the devastating bus fire accident near Chinna Tekur village in Kurnool district. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. Government authorities will extend all possible support to the injured and affected families," CM N Chandrababu Naidu posted on X.

Kurnool Bus Fire: What We Know So Far

-It was a Volvo bus that was going to Bengaluru from Hyderabad around midnight on Friday.

-The accident occurred between 3 and 3:10 am when the bus collided with a bike, causing a fuel leak that led to the fire, said Kurnool District Collector Dr A Siri, as per news agency ANI.

-The accident took place near Kurnool on National Highway 44 (NH-44).

-41 passengers were onboard when the accident happened. 21 people have been rescued. As per ANI, 20 people were killed in the fire. The bodies of only 12 have been identified so far. 

-The driver fled the scene, according to NDTV sources.

-On noticing the fire, 20 people jumped out of the bus after breaking the windows, NDTV reported.
