LPG CrisisAmid the soaring LPG crisis in India, Infosys has issued advisories to employees in Bengaluru, Pune and Chennai centres. The advisories mentioned significant changes in menu, temporary shut down of live counters and so on.
The advisory to the Bengaluru employees stated that food-court operations will be realigned effective March 12. The document added that certain servings. including the withdrawal of live counters until further notice.
As per the authorities in the Pune campus, alternative cooking methods with electrical appliances has been initiated. Cooked food has been sourced from external central kitchens. Furthermore, employees have been instructed to avoid internal catering for occasion to cut down the cost.
Meanwhile, Chennai's advisory mentioned that some significant food items will be temporarily unavailable and others will be served in restricted quantities.
Infosys, with over 3,20,000 employees, most of these are based in India has created capacity to treat 100 per cent of the organic waste within its campuses (food waste and garden waste), through biogas plants and organic waste converters. The produced biogas is used in food court kitchens, and the compost is used in the landscaping. Sewage sludge generated from the sewage treatment plants is treated in solar drying greenhouses, and the resulting dry sludge is mixed with compost and used in landscaping, according to its ESG disclosure statements in its annual report.
HCL Tech Promotes WFH
HCLTech allowed employees at its Chennai office to work from home on March 12 and 13 after cafeteria operations were hit by the LPG crunch, Mint reported.
The move was initiated after several cafeteria vendors were unable to operate due to the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, prompting the company to offer employees the option of remote work for two days.
According to ANI, the government has prioritised domestic LPG supply amid the West Asia crisis and set up a three-member committee to examine the hospitality sector’s concerns and ensure that genuine requirements are addressed. In its note, National Restaurant Authority of IndiaI said, “In order to safeguard business continuity, employment, and the stability of our sector, NRAI urges all members to immediately adopt the following fuel conservation and operational continuity measures.”
Oil Companies’ measures
In response to ongoing geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel supply, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have announced measures to boost LPG production and ensure priority supply for domestic consumers, while essential non‑domestic sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions will also receive assured supply. A committee of Executive Directors from the three Oil Marketing Companies has been formed to review requests from other non‑domestic sectors, with decisions to be taken based on merit and product availability.
Food Delivery Apps Likely To Suffer
Eternal and Swiggy’s food delivery businesses may get impacted if gas shortage affects restaurant operations. While their quick commerce businesses can see some spike in demand because of increase in home-made food consumption, at an Ebida level the impact can still be negative because food delivery is significantly more profitable than quick commerce business presently, JM Financial said.
