People removed from the Madrasi camp area under the demolition drive against encroachment in Delhi’s Jangpura have been given flats in Narela. Over 189 families were given EWS flats in Sector G7, Pocket 4 and 5. Allottees said electric meters were installed as soon as they took possession of the flats.

Water, electricity, sewerage, along with other facilities, were made available for the residents. However, the area lacks schools, hospitals, dispensaries and internal transport.

People said that they are feeling better than before after getting flats in exchange for slums, adding that it would have been more convenient for them if flats were within a 10 km radius of Madrasi Camp, as it would have been easy for them to reach their workplaces. In the current situation, it would not be easy for them to travel a distance of 40-45 km to go to work. They will have to now look for jobs in the Narela and Bawana areas only.

People who came to Narela from Madrasi Camp said that most of the people got flats 15-20 days ago, before the demolition drive started in the area. 80 families were allocated flats in Pocket 4 and 109 families in Pocket 5. As soon as the flats were announced, everyone applied for electricity meters, which were installed for most of the flats on Monday.
