The Maharashtra government has taken a big step in accordance with the Central Government's emphasis on expenditure control and fuel conservation. From now on, no minister in Maharashtra will be permitted to utilise a government aircraft or a chartered plane without the prior approval of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The State Government has issued clear directives in this regard.
According to a report by Jagran.com, a new administrative protocol has been implemented to regulate the air travel of ministers. Under this protocol, if any minister or senior official wishes to utilise a government aircraft, it will be mandatory to first obtain permission from the Chief Minister's Office. The aircraft will be made available only after approval has been granted by the Chief Minister's Office.
Action Intensifies Following PM Modi’s Appeal
The action by Maharashtra government comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appealed for fuel conservation, a reduction in government expenditure, and the responsible utilisation of resources. Subsequently, discussions regarding the control of government expenses took place across various states. It is said that the Maharashtra government has begun implementing measures in alignment with this objective.
Ban On Unnecessary Air Travel
According to government sources, some ministers had been utilising aircraft even for short-distance travel, putting an additional financial burden on the state's exchequer. Now, the use of aircraft will be permitted solely for essential and official purposes.
Focus on Expenditure Control
The government is further prioritising a policy of expenditure control keeping in view the state's economic condition, mounting revenue pressures, and the funds required for developmental projects. Directives have also been issued to various departments to instil discipline regarding government meetings, official tours, and travel expenses.
Following this decision, reactions from different political parties are expected. While some have welcomed this move, there is a possibility that the opposition may express apprehensions regarding the potential impact of this decision on the functioning of the ministers.
