At least 11 people have died, while several others remain in critical condition after allegedly consuming toxic liquor in Maharashtra’s Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune areas. The authorities have launched a probe focused on methanol-laced liquor following the death of eight persons in and around Pune in 24 hours, officials said on Friday.

According to preliminary information, eight deaths were reported from the Dapodi and Phugewadi areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad. The Pimpri Chinchwad police said five persons from the Phugewadi area died on Thursday. Though they initially said that four of the five deaths were not linked to liquor consumption, an investigation has now been launched into all the deaths, an official said. At present, the death toll stands at 11.

The toxic liquor was allegedly prepared by Yogesh Wankhede, who is said to be involved in the illegal liquor trade and already has multiple cases registered against him. Police officials have arrested the accused in connection with the incident, according to PTI reported.

An official from the Hadapsar police station said three persons died in localities under their jurisdiction. "The deceased had complained of abdominal pain. The exact cause of death and the possible poisonous liquor angle are being investigated," he said.

According to News18, citing sources, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered strict action over the alleged hooch tragedy and issued directions to the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioners.

“Do not spare anyone. Take strict action," the Chief Minister directed police officials.
