At least six people died while 14 others were injured after a wall of the temple collapsed in Maharashtra's Sangli due to heavy rain on Tuesday. The incident took place at the Margudevi Temple in Mothewadi village under Jath tehsil in the western Maharashtra district, the officials said.
According to news agency PTI, the incident took place during a period of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area. The sudden wall collapse trapped several people under the debris.
Devotees take shelter near wall, get tarpped instead
There were around 350 devotees at the temple premises when the tragic incident took place. On Tuesday evening, a sudden storm prompted devotees to take shelter near the wall and tin shed. However, the wall collapsed.
The incident sparked panic at the scene. With the help of residents and the administration, relief and rescue operations were launched. The injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals, where the condition of some is reported to be critical.
Police and administration teams arrived at the scene and began clearing the debris. According to officials, the continuous rain had weakened the wall, leading to the accident. The administration is currently investigating the matter.
What did Sangli SP say?
Speaking about the incident, Sangli Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi said, "There were around 350 devotees on the temple premises. In the evening, sudden strong winds accompanied by heavy rains lashed the area, prompting devotees to take shelter along a wall and under tin sheets."

"The wall and the tin sheets suddenly collapsed, trapping devotees," the Sangli SP added.
PM Modi expresses grief
PM Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic incident. In a post on X, he said, "Deeply pained to hear the loss of lives due to the collapse of a wall in Sangli, Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this sad hour. May the injured recover at the earliest."
