Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, while responding to the FIR filed against her in Chhattisgarh's Raipur for her alleged derogatory remarks against Home Minister Amit Shah, stated that her words were twisted, adding that "idiots do not understand idioms". A massive political controversy erupted after Moitra asserted that Shah's head should be cut and put on a table if he was unable to stop infiltration from Bangladesh. However, the TMC MP clarified that she used idioms to express herself, adding that the police twisted her remarks to lodge the FIR. She further stated that the remarks she gave in Bengali meant "taking responsibility".

Raipur police registered an FIR against Moitra under Section 196 (promoting enmity between groups on multiple grounds) and Section 197 (imputations prejudicial to national integration) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, Moitra stated that she gave her remarks in Bengali, which meant taking accountability. She also slammed the BJP leaders for not understanding the idiom and allegedly "twisting her words".

"Similarly, in the Bengali language, 'matha kata jawa, we say lojjay matha kata chhe,' which means that 'you are so ashamed that you can cut your own head off. When we say matha kata jawa, matha ke tebi le rakha, it means taking accountability, owning responsibility," Moitra was quoted as saying by ANI. "This is an idiom. Now, of course, idiots don't understand idioms, which is where we are," she added.

The TMC leader further stated that such tactics against her will not work, adding that she has emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha polls after she was expelled from the parliament last year. "You did this before; you expelled me from Parliament, and I won and came back. Every time you do this to me, politically it gets you nowhere, it makes me into Joan of Arc," the TMC MP added.
