The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, in strong opposition to SIR in Bengal, has called the situation a 'super emergency'. CM Mamata Banerjee demanded the Election Commission of India (ECI) to halt the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across different states.
Mamata, while speaking at an administrative meeting in North Bengal, accused ECI of keeping election officials busy to hinder the functionality of the government for the next 3 months, as she demanded a stay on the exercise.
“This is a deliberate attempt to malign people! So many people have died, not a single condolence message by the Election Commission," she said. “You can send me to jail or cut my throat but don’t cut the name of a single genuine voter."
Raising doubts on the intention behind conducting SIR just before elections, Benerjee called the process 'vorebandi'.
She slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah over lapses in internal security, CRPF and BSF operations, and infiltration threats, demanding his immediate resignation. The Chief Minister also blasted GST as a “colossal blunder” and called for its complete rollback.

Last week, the West Bengal Chief Minister held a big protest against the voter list update. She said if even one real voter is removed, the BJP government at the Centre will surely fall.
She called the Election Commission a political tool of the BJP. She said the update is being done only in some places on purpose to scare and stop real voters from voting. She also connected SIR to the controversial National Register of Citizens NRC, saying it is a plan to trouble honest citizens.

The attacks on ruling BJP took a serious turn after she claimed that two people committed suicide and one attempted to kill himself, supposedly gripped by anxiety over the SIR exercise. As per her claims, a woman and her daughter were admitted to the hospital after an alleged suicide attempt over SIR forms, which she called a 'deadly campaign of fear' by BJP.
