Assam Rifles Convoy Attack: Two people have been detained, and a van was seized on Saturday in connection with an ambush of an Assam Rifles Convoy on Friday, September 19 that had killed two army personnel and injured five others. 

Assam Rifles Convoy Attack: 2 Suspects Held, Used Van Recovered

The suspects were held by the Manipur police on Saturday. Besides, a van, presumed to have been used in the attack on Assam rifles, was also recovered, as per officials. The silver-blue colour van was found at Mutum Yangbi in Imphal West district, which is almost 10 km away from the incident site.

On Friday, September 19, a group of armed men ambushed and attacked a convoy of Assam Rifles in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, killing two army personnel and injuring five other members of the Paramilitary force.

“... Security forces carried out a massive operation in Shantipur and Ishok areas... Two persons were detained for further verification,” the Manipur Police said in a statement late on Saturday (September 20, 2025).

According to police, the recovered vehicle is owned by multiple people, and it has traced all of them.

"During the last 24 hours, the overall law-and-order situation in the state was tense but under control. In the follow-up to the incident at Nambol Sabal Leikai in which two personnel of the Assam Rifles were martyred, security forces carried out a massive operation in Shantipur and Ishok areas," the statement read.

Attack On Assam Rifles Convoy In Manipur: Details

- The two members of the paramilitary force, who lost their lives to the ambush attack, were identified as Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap. The injured soldiers were taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for treatment.

- The military truck was ambushed on the outskirts of the Imphal district.

- Terrorists attacked a Tata 407 vehicle carrying paramilitary forces on the same road Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently used during his visit to Manipur, officials said, adding that the incident occurred at 5:50 pm while the vehicle was travelling from Patsoi company operating base to Nambol base.

"In the general area, Nambol Sabal Leikai, the column was ambushed by unidentified terrorists on the Highway in the denotified area of Manipur. In the ensuing action, two personnel of the Assam Rifles were martyred and five were injured," an official statement read.
