Manipur News: The National People's Party (NPP) has withdrawn its support to the N Biren Singh-led Manipur government with immediate effect, citing the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

In a letter to BJP President and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, NPP president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the situation in Manipur has deteriorated in the last few weeks, leading to the loss of many innocent lives.

"People in the State are going through immense suffering," Sangma wrote, adding that the party feel the N Biren Singh government has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy.

"Keeping the current situation in mind, the National People's Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led Government in the State of Manipur, with immediate effect," the letter added.

How NPP's Exit Will Impact Biren's Govt

The party has a significant representation in the violence-marred state with its seven MLAs. The MLAs include Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao AC), Khuraijam Loken Singh (Wangoi AC), Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam AC), Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang AC), Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh (Kakching AC), N. Kayisii (Tadubi AC), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong AC).

In the last assembly polls concluded in 2022, BJP won 32 seats while NPP secured victory on 7. Other parties, including Congress, won 21 seats.

The NPP exit would not cause a power change in the state, as the BJP holds a comfortable majority in the state assembly.

Six Deaths In Jiribam

NPP's decision to quit the Manipur government came a day after protests erupted in the state over the brutal killing of six of a family, including 3 children by Kuki militants. The victims were kidnapped from a relief camp in Jiribam district and were subsequently killed.
