Manipur violence: Two days after six members of the Meitei community were reported to have been killed, the bodies of two of the deceased were recovered on Sunday. The two bodies, of a 60-year-old woman and two-and-half-year old child, were found floating in a river near Jiribam a week after they went missing from the Borobekra area. All six belonged to the same family and had reportedly been abducted from a Meitei relief camp set up at the Borobekra police station.
The surviving member of the family, Laisharam Herojit, confirmed to NDTV that his family had been executed, allegedly by Kuki militants. Herojit's wife, two children, mother-in-law, wife's sister, and her son were taken hostage during a clash between militants and the CRPF in Borobekra on November 11.
The decomposed bodies of Herojit’s two-and-a-half-year-old son, L Chingheinganba, and his 60-year-old mother-in-law, Y Rani Devi, were found in a river near Jiribam. The boy's headless and dismembered body was discovered wedged among tree branches, while his grandmother’s semi-naked body was found floating face-down.

Earlier, on Friday, three more bodies were recovered. These included Herojit’s eight-month-old baby, his wife’s sister, and her eight-year-old daughter. All three were taken to a hospital morgue in Silchar, Assam. The body of Herojit’s wife is yet to be recovered, though officials confirm all six are dead. The tragedy highlights the ongoing violence in the region.

Following the tragic deaths of six hostages in Jiribam, violence erupted in Manipur's capital, Imphal, on Saturday. Angry protesters vandalised BJP MLAs' homes and attempted to storm Chief Minister N Biren Singh's residence, accusing the government of inaction and poor communication during the rescue operation.
Around two dozen suspected Kuki militants carried out the Monday attack in Borobekra, NDTV reported, citing police sources. The militants split into two groups, of which one took people hostages and the other vandalised homes. Ten militants who attacked a CRPF camp were killed in retaliation. The authorities later displayed recovered assault weapons and an rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) as evidence. While the Kuki tribes alleged the deceased were "village volunteers", the police debunked the claim as they highlighted extensive gunfire damage to a police SUV.
