The death toll in the gunfight between state security forces and militants in Manipur's Tengnoupal district has climbed to two, as another security personnel, Takhellambam Saileshwore, was shot dead on Wednesday evening. Earlier, 32-year-old Manipur Police personnel Wangkhem Somorjit lost his life during an ambush near Ima Kondong Lairembi Devi temple. Two more Manipur Police personnel sustained injuries in the exchange of fire.

The militants, during the ambush, also targeted a temporary commando post with RPG shells, damaging several parked vehicles. Following the incident, a large number of women from Malom in Imphal West district blocked the road to the airport in protest against the killing of the policemen in Moreh.

A spokesperson for the Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed in connection with Somorjit's killing, declared that the deceased personnel's body would not be accepted by the family until the culprits are arrested and brought to justice. Women, dressed in traditional mourning attire, staged a roadblock to halt vehicular movement.

Moreh has witnessed regular exchanges of fire between security forces and militants in recent days. The latest incident occurred just 48 hours after the arrest of two suspects involved in the killing of a police officer. Earlier this month, concerns were raised by authorities about the potential involvement of foreign mercenaries from Myanmar in the gun and bomb attacks.
