Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN services, have been suspended in five districts of Manipur after fresh protests and violent clashes in Imphal on Saturday evening. This took effect from 11:45 PM on June 7 and will remain in place for the next five days.

The districts which will face Internet outage include Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur. Besides, a curfew has been imposed in the Bishnupur district, while orders restricting the movement of five or more people have been issued in the remaining four districts.

Manipur police announced this move on the social media platform X at around 2 am on Sunday.

"In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur especially in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching & Bishnupur districts districts of Manipur, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission serious of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have repercussions for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur, "Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N Ashok Kumar said in an order.

The order also stated that the authorities fear the spreading of false information on social media may further fuel unrest, which may even cause the danger of loss of lives.

"There is an imminent danger of loss of life and /or damage to public/private property, and wide spread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours, which might be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/ messaging services on mobile services, SMS services and dongle services," it added.

Protesters allegedly stormed a police post in Imphal after reports that five volunteers of Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei group, were arrested. Police fired several rounds of fire in the air to disperse the crowd. Protestors clashed with security forces personnel at several other locations as well.
