A fierce gunfight broke out in Manipur’s Moreh on Saturday after insurgents attacked police commandos, officials said. Unidentified gunmen targeted vehicles carrying police commandos when they were heading towards Key Location Point (KLP) from Moreh, news agency PTI reported citing eyewitnesses. 

Meanwhile, one policeman sustained injuries in exchange of gunfire while two houses were set ablaze in Moreh. "One policeman sustained splinter injuries when they come under attack while crossing M Chahnou village section of Imphal-Moreh road," an officer confirmed.

According to officials, the injured policeman is currently undergoing treatment at 5 Assam Rifles camp. Preliminary reports state that indiscriminate  gunfire was still continuing near the New Moreh entrance gate and M Chahnou village.

In a separate incident which also took place on Saturday, a teen was shot dead by unidentified men in the Kangpokpi district of the northwestern state, which is nearly 45 kilometers from the state’s capital city Imphal. Following the incident, more security forces were deployed in the village and combing operations are still going on. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also condemned the killing of the youth. 

"A few evil elements are trying to disrupt the peace in the state. It's an unfortunate incident and we highly condemned the incident. Combing operation is on to nab the culprits. We won't spare the culprits," the Manipur CM said earlier in the day.

The incident came amid ongoing tensions in Manipur where more than 180 people lost their lives since May 3, 2023. The ethnic clashes in the northeastern state broke out on May 3 after the tribals of the Kuki community attended a ‘Solidarity March’ to protest against the inclusion of the majority Meitei community in the ST category.

Meanwhile, Manipur CM N Biren Singh recently declared financial packages for displaced individuals who lost their homes due to violence and are yet to return.
