The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday stated that the last rites of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be performed at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi at 11.45am on Saturday with full state honours. The statement from the MHA came amid the demands from the Congress party to build a memorial for India's 13th prime minister.

"It has been decided by the government that a state funeral will be accorded to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 am on 28th December, 2024, at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi," the ministry of home affairs (MHA) stated in a communication.

The home ministry informed that cremation and other necessary formalities can continue to take place because a trust has to be formed, and space will be allocated to it. However, the government confirmed that they will allocate space for a memorial for Singh. The announcement from home ministry came after the Congress alleged that not finding a location for the cremation and memorial for Singh was an insult to the ex prime minister.

"The people of our country are simply unable to understand why the Government of India could not find a location for his cremation and memorial that is befitting of his global stature, record of outstanding achievements, and exemplary service to the nation for decades," Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
