A youth from Meerut, identified as Zaid, has been sentenced to death by a Saudi Arabian court for drug trafficking. He has been imprisoned in the Sumesi Jihad jail since January 15, 2023. The Meerut police were informed of the verdict through the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL), which received details from Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry.
Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vipin Tada confirmed that Interpol had alerted them about Zaid’s conviction, prompting the police to notify Zaid’s family. On Sunday, Mundali police station in-charge Saumya delivered the information via a written notice. The SSP also stated that Zaid's criminal record in Meerut is under review.
Zaid had initially travelled to Saudi Arabia about six years ago to work as a driver for the Suwaleh Muhammad Company. However, dissatisfied with his pay, he switched to another company, where an accident involving his vehicle led to a financial dispute with the employer. Fearing legal action, Zaid fled the company and later found work as a driver for a Saudi policeman’s family.
According to Zaid's relatives, his troubles escalated when Saudi authorities allegedly found drugs in his possession while he was on duty in a police vehicle. He was arrested on January 15, 2023, and subsequently imprisoned in Jeddah Central Jail on charges of drug trafficking.

A Saudi criminal court presented evidence against Zaid, resulting in a death sentence. The sentence has now been forwarded to the Interior Ministry for final approval. The news devastated Zaid’s family, including his parents, seven brothers and two sisters. His eldest brother, Monu, who also works in Saudi Arabia, is assisting in efforts to secure legal aid.
