As many as 10 persons were killed after flash floods, triggered by torrential rains, wreaked havoc in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district. As per the local officials, cited by HT, the downpour has also caused landslides, particularly in the Gasuapara area. Seven members of a family were killed after being trapped in their house amid a landslide in the remote village of Hatiasia Songma. Among the deceased were three children. Three people lost their lives in Dalu in rain-related incidents.
The relentless rainfall, which began around midnight on Friday, has caused significant damage, including the washing away of a bridge in the Gasuapara region.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed his anguish over the tragic incidents. He also convened a review meeting on incessant rains and its devastation across five districts of Garo Hills. CM Sangma also announced compensation for the next of kin of those deceased in the disastrous flash floods, news agency PTI reported.
At a review meeting, CM Sangma proposed the use of bailey bridge technology, which allows for quick assembly and easy transportation.
He further ordered that all wooden bridges in Meghalaya be identified for replacement with more durable structures.
Several landslides have disrupted road access between Dalu and Baghmara, prompting the administration to direct officials to identify alternative routes to restore connectivity in the region.
Both the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been mobilised to conduct search and rescue missions in the most severely affected areas.
