Bengaluru Monkeypox: Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has set up monkeypox testing kiosks to screen international passengers, particularly those arriving from African nations. Passengers who test positive for the virus will be required to undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine and isolation, mirroring protocols implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Times Of India report quoted a spokesperson for Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) as saying that, "KIA is fully prepared and compliant with all health and safety protocols issued by relevant authorities in light of the global monkeypox situation." As part of the screening process, all international arrivals are being checked for elevated temperatures.
Currently, India has reported one confirmed case of monkeypox. A 26-year-old man from Haryana was admitted to LNJP Hospital after exhibiting symptoms. His condition is reported to be stable. Notably, this case does not involve the Clade 1b strain of the monkeypox virus, which is considered more virulent and has been detected in countries where the disease was previously unknown.
On August 14, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared monkeypox a public health emergency. In another recent development, a suspected case was reported at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport, where a traveller arriving from Jeddah displayed symptoms consistent with the virus.
Monkeypox Can Spread Through
Monkeypox is a viral infection initially identified in primates and can spread to humans through direct contact with infected animals or through human-to-human transmission via bodily fluids, respiratory droplets or contaminated materials.
Monkeypox Symptoms
Symptoms include fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes, with most cases resolving within a few weeks, although severe cases can occur. Public health measures are focused on isolation, infection control, and monitoring for outbreaks.
