India Monsoon Update: The India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday that this monsoon will bring above-normal cumulative rainfall to India, ruling out the likelihood of El Nino conditions throughout the season. "India is likely to see above-normal rainfall in the four-month monsoon season (June to September) with cumulative rainfall estimated at 105 per cent of the long-period average of 87 cm," IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told a press conference in New Delhi.

He said it is doubtful that El Nino conditions, which are linked to below-normal monsoon rainfall in the Indian subcontinent, would materialise this time.

Extreme heat is already a problem in certain parts of the nation, and the months of April to June are expected to see a notably high number of heat wave days. Water shortages and strain on electrical grids might arise from this.

India's agriculture industry, which provides for the livelihood of around 42.3% of the population and accounts for 18.2% of the nation's GDP, depends heavily on the monsoon.

Of the net farmed area, 52% depends on the main rain-bearing system. Apart from electricity generation nationwide, it is also essential for the replenishment of reservoirs that are vital for drinking water.

The nation is consequently very relieved by the forecast of typical rainfall throughout the monsoon season.

Normal cumulative rainfall does not, however, provide a consistent temporal and geographical distribution of rain throughout the nation, and climate change makes the rain-bearing system even more variable.

According to climate experts, there are fewer rainy days and more severe rain events (more rain in a short amount of time), which causes droughts and floods more frequently.
